The Fortitude Flow Cold Water Swimming Course is now live!

After a successful pilot, Fortitude Wellbeing are now super pleased to be able to offer the 7-day dip as a paid course to get more people cold water swimming safely.

The pilot course allowed us to undertake some limited research into the effects of regular cold water immersion on attendees overall wellbeing. The results are in! While the sample size was very small, the initial feedback has been incredibly positive. We used two scales to measure changes in wellbeing as a result of the cold water swimming programme. The SWEMBS and WHO-5 are used frequently to measure wellbeing interventions. The people who took part in the pilot responded to these scales at three points; before starting the programme, on the last day, and one week later. The results suggest that cold water swimming has a positive impact on wellbeing! More importantly, all of the 7 day dippers have continued to swim with their group, up to 3 times a week. We will continue to collect wellbeing data over the course of the next few sessions in order to support future funding so we can run more groups in Somerset.

Laura and Olly have developed the course together. Laura is a long-term advocate of cold water swimming. Olly is a researcher with a background in psychology, health and wellbeing. The primary goals were to improve overall mental wellbeing in a safe environment, while also developing a community of like-minded people to continue swimming together.

The sessions are fully insured and lifeguarded. The swims are progressive, starting out with a very short dip and ultimately swimming up to around 100m if you feel comfortable in doing so. There is no pressure and the groups are kept small to enable discussion about the effects and to allow everyone to get to know each other. We also aim to provide a mix of sunrise and sunset swims as each provides its own unique experience.

Cold water immersion has been shown to offer a number of benefits. As we progress, we will be developing the course to include other aspects of holistic care. We will also be introducing a range of other courses along the way to suit a variety of circumstances, as well as funded options to benefit a number of local community groups..

We remain rooted in the local community and are excited to be able to bring this opportunity to local residents.
